Barely a Book Club

Teetering on the edge of a normal book club

Once upon a time in 1984 September 11, 2007

Where were you in 1984? Perhaps traveling the world, listening to the The Cars, watching The A-team, or maybe playing with your Cabbage Patch Kid. I was probably in the later category (or perhaps eating Play-Doh). Well I’m sure you never imagined George Orwell’s 1984. But how far away are we from this future?

Anyway…read up to Book 2 Chapter 6 (half-way). And by personal request of Kelly we will be at the House of Commons, reservation under Book Club.

I’ll just say it now. I was graduating from High School.

And I love Kelly’s personal request.

  2. Inspector Love Says:

Let’s see… I was watching/listening to things I probably wasn’t old enough to watch/listen to… I can’t say I had great taste at 7, but I did have a permissive parent and we rented a lot of movies.

Here’s some pop culture from 1984.

Movies: Beverly Hills Cop, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Splash, Footloose, Ghost Busters.

Songs: “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” Cyndi Lauper, “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” Elton John, “Karma Chameleon” Culture Club, “What’s Love Got To Do With It” Tina Turner, “I Just Called To Say I Love You” Stevie Wonder, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” Wham! and, of course, “Like A Virgin,” Madonna.

TV: He-Man, Inspector Gadget, Mork & Mindy, Scooby-Doo, Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Transformers, Miami Vice, Punky Brewster, Highway to Heaven, Murder She Wrote, the Cosby Show, and Who’s the Boss?

Not exactly what Orwell pictured, but probably horrific in its own way. I may not be there Saturday.

Maybe I’m still trapped in the 80’s currently I am watching Murder She Wrote on DVD (courtesy of my mom).

  4. Ant Says:

Kylle — you’re not trapped in the 80s. You’re trapped in your mother’s tv show collection 🙂

Inspector — I hope you make it!

  5. cobookclub Says:

This sucks, but I can’t make it. I’m going to this luncheon which turns out not to be at lunch, but at 10. I’m completely bummed because I had all these things to talk about 😦 Will someone jot some notes down??

  6. Ant Says:

So wait — Shanda is out of town.
The boys deserted us (and one of them is with Shanda)
    Amy and Crystal deserted us.
    Inspector might not come.
    Now Kylle has a luncheon.
I think Jen’s skipping this book.

So once again, it’s just me and Kelly? Good thing I like her 🙂

  7. Kylle Says:

Maybe Courtney will be back? Or perhaps one of our new bloggers might join…I promise to come back!!

  8. Ant Says:

oh yeah — this might be the week she said she’d be back in town. Courtney, if you’re reading this, come! You and Kelly are already BFFs from being the first two to arrive for week 1 of Blindness 🙂

And you all should be proud of me. I stopped the 1984 reading at exactly the assigned spot! I didn’t read ahead!!!!

  9. Shanda Says:

This has nothing to do with 1984, but as a book club, maybe we should consider reading the One Denver book selection?
