Barely a Book Club

Teetering on the edge of a normal book club

Middlesex: Book 1 of 2009 January 20, 2009

OK — hopefully we’ve all gotten a chance to actually buy or check out the book, so let’s make it official and assign an amount to be read by this Saturday’s meeting. The author has obligingly divided the book into sections, so let’s read through “Book One”, which ends at page 76 if you have the trade paperback edition.

Let’s meet at House of Commons again, unless someone really wants to meet elsewhere. I’m happy to give them our business if everyone else is 🙂

We’ll meet at our normal 10:30 unless the Inspector is volunteering. Then we’ll meet at 10:00 (but don’t come early, because the tea shop doesn’t open until 10!). Inspector, please let us know in the comments.

Opening 2009: Reading List January 12, 2009

Here’s our list of books for the first part of the year:
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
What is the What?
Great Expectations or Bleak House (we can vote when we get there)

Any preferences on where to meet? I thought I had a copy of Middlesex on hand, but I don’t, so I’ll post shortly how far we should read to.

If you know anyone who wants to read one of these books with us, bring them along!

Onward and Upward December 29, 2008

It’s the end of one year and the beginning of another, and we have some things to decide:

    1. Do we want to keep watching Chuzzlewit?
    2. If yes, when should we meet again? Does January 10 sound good?
    3. Also if yes, do we wait to start another book until we’re done?
    4. Regardless of “when”, is the next book going to be “The Historian”, since that was on our list from last time?
    5. And then do we want to read some more Dickens?
    6. Last, do we want to resume our every Saturday meeting time? Maybe we should just meet on the 10th to discuss “business” 🙂

Regardless of these answers and more, Happy New Year to all!

Ready for Chuzzlewit via DVD, Part II? December 3, 2008

Is everyone ready for the next installment of electronic Chuzzlewit (as opposed to the acoustic version, which the Inspector and Ant are still forcing themselves to read)?

Can you all meet on Saturday the 6th, as usual?

Movie Night Recap: Tale of Two Cities November 17, 2008

Those members of the BBC who missed out on the movie night last night didn’t really miss out on much, except a lot of:

    Cool Ranch Doritos
    Gummi Bears
    “that wasn’t in the book!”
a lot of imdb trivia such as: Chris Sarandon (Darnay/Carton) was Susan Sarandon’s first husband, and Alice Krige plays Lucie Manette well enough to later become the Borg Queen
a whole lotta giggling at Gaspard’s fabulously 80s feathered hair (I think that was the character)

It was probably a good recap of the book, but really left so much out and took so many other liberties that we had a hard time taking it too seriously. It was also really slow, so there was plenty of time for visiting, which was nice.

Continuing in our “read it to me” vein, the next meeting of BBC will be the beginning of the Martin Chuzzlewit mini-series at Kylle’s house on the 22nd at 10:30. If you need directions, contact her directly, as we won’t post her address here on the blog.

Kylle — do you want to post a list of things we can bring and then we can sign up?

Yes we are! November 12, 2008

(a slightly cheesy nod to our President-elect’s campaign slogan)

… meeting this weekend. Come rain or shine or even if we finally get snow, BBC will meet this Saturday, November 15 at 10:30 at Cafe Caliente.

Kylle has taken the time to give us a reading breakdown, and the first chunk was to Chapter 7. However, in looking at the Inspector’s last comment on the previous entry, it looks like we might be farther along than that. Thus, I’m opting for Chunk #2 and telling you to read to Chapter 13.

For future meetings, here is the breakdown so you can stay current, even if a blog entry isn’t posted early in the week:
To Chapter 7
To Chapter 13
To Chapter 20
To Chapter 28
To Chapter 36
To Chapter 44
To Chapter 50
To The End

And to discuss at BBC this week:
If everyone is in town this week, we could watch Tale of Two Cities (finally) at my (Ant’s) house Sun, Tues, Wed, or Thurs.

Martin Chuzzlewhere? October 24, 2008

UPDATED – We will meet at Cafe Caliente at 10:30 am

Something must have happened to the site, because the following post I wrote on Tuesday didn’t go up. Sorry for that! I really did get things in on time 🙂

I still don’t have my copy of Martin Chuzzlewit…are there only like 10 copies floating around in this world. I need a little help from the lucky few that actually have the book. Can someone break it down and tell us a good stopping place? I can read it online, but I can’t tell how many “pages” things are because there isn’t a computer screen to page conversion chart. From what I can gather this book is kind of long (in the 900 neighborhood) so I don’t know how much we want to bite off each week. Let me know!

Also…there aren’t any Spark/Cliff Notes available but I’m going to try to compile some stuff via the internet.

As for this week…any suggestions for where to meet?
