Cereal Exchange!! August 29, 2007

It’s been a while since we had a cereal exchange and I thought it would be great for the last part of Blindness.
Never been to a cereal exchange? Basically everyone brings a box of their favorite cereal (except if you like bran cereal then don’t show up) and I will provide the milk, soy, juice, and coffee. Well the coffee part I might need assistance because I don’t know how to use our grinder or the coffee maker :). You are welcome to bring anything else that sounds tasty.

If you don’t know how to get to my house email me at thecoloradobookclub@hotmail.com. See you there!

Blindess Part II August 23, 2007

Great conversation last week about our new book “Blindness”. I’m very interested how everyone will feel when they finish the book. I think the governments reaction in the book is so interesting and I have really been thinking about how our government would act.

I don’t have the book with me today, but I think we were reading to about 218. Does anyone remember? Let’s meet at Scooter Joe’s at 10:30.

Literary Snobbery August 14, 2007

While this has nothing to do directly with the BBC I wanted to report that I might be a Literary Snob!! I took time away from Chabon’s TYPU to read a book I picked up at a garage sale “Vendetta, Lucky’s Revenge” by Jackie Collins. Okay the first question you might ask is why I would even buy this book, and to answer that, if I bought five books or more I got a better deal.
So I started reading said book this week and I’m completely stunned that something like this would get published. Sometimes the passages would remind me of my own teenage manuscripts. Then I thought to myself…am I a snob??? Obviously books such as these make money, why do I think they are so elementary? The words don’t flow together and often information is just added in so they don’t have to explain things. I think I’m going to finish this book just to see if the plot line is so engaging I forget about the actual words. Anyway…does anyone else feel this way or am I just a snob??

This week will be starting Blindness, reading to page 114. Let’s meet at Stella’s.

Movie Night 8.10.06 August 6, 2007

Well we definately had some negative opinions of Chabon’s TYPU. While everyone agreed that his style of writing is remarkable the plot didn’t quite catch on and the frequent reversion to Yiddish caused more than a few to be confused.
I wish I could say I finished, but I’m only about 1/2 way there but plan on completing.

This week is a movie night and I have volunteered my home. If you don’t have directions email me at thecoloradobookclub@hotmail.com. No one had any ideas about a movie, so please post your thoughts. It was requested that it not be about Jewish Refugees, the Holocaust, or Alaska.

Well this is the last week for TYPU. It will be interesting to hear how everyone felt at the end.

Let’s try a new place The Press Coffee Co. in Belmar. Also anyone wanting Jamba Juice can take a quick hop and a skip across the street 🙂

See you there at 10:30.
