Barely a Book Club

Teetering on the edge of a normal book club

Secret Santa November 29, 2006

Filed under: This Week at BC — antof9 @ 11:07 pm

Thanks to the power of democracy, we are going to have a Secret Santa Book Exchange for our Christmas party on December 16th.  Here’s how it works.

If you want to participate either put a comment on the blog or email me.  I’ll put all the names into a hat & we’ll draw names on Saturday.  If you won’t be able to be there, let me know & we’ll keep a name for you.

Then you need to buy a book to give to the person whose name you draw.  But it’s SECRET Santa so don’t tell anyone who you have.  As far as the book, it can be new or used.  Just make sure it’s not a library book or a stolen book.

Bring the book wrapped on December 16th to the BC Christmas Party.

So…did we like TTW? 12/2/06

Last Saturday saw us at Aviano, where Joel got to see latte art, and more attendees hadn’t read the book than had.  Shanda showed up as usual with typed notes, ready to discuss the book.  Having finished the book before the previous week’s BBC, Ant gave a weak attempt at continued discussion.  As is often the case, we were again confronted with the question of “should I finish this?” by members who weren’t quite current on the reading.  Consensus?  Well, it depends how invested you already are in the book.  And if you care that the entire ending was given away in this week’s meeting.  No one gave it a hearty recommendation.

We did come to the realization that we’re reading a lot of debut novels, and briefly (as in maybe 3 sentences total) talked about how wishy-washy we might be feeling about some of these books.

Onward and upward!

We begin The Thirteenth Tale (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780743298025&itm=1 ) (only available in hardback — whose recommendation was this again?!) this week, and it was suggested that since it’s about 400 pages, we read 100 each week.

Either that, or this could be a “bye” week, to give us all a chance to acquire a copy, and we could start TTT on December 9.  We’re meeting this week at The House of Commons (save room for some of their yummy scones) at 10:30 http://www.houseofcommonstea.com/

To assist you with future planning, the December 16 BBC will be meeting at Kelly’s house (details to come), and there may be some sort of holiday theme.

For Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, we’re going to be thankful that we’re done with Time Traveller’s Wife. Yes, finish the book and come prepared to discuss the timeline (Shanda posted a link in the comments of the last BBC blog entry).

We’ll be at Aviano Coffee, where Joel can learn coffee latte art, and they also have quiche and blooming tea. How can we go wrong? We’ll miss our fearless leader (Kylle, Adam, whoever you want to name), but she probably won’t miss us. Much.

Ask and Receive 11/18/06 November 15, 2006

Well Ant, ask and ye shall receive a new post. Unlike the Great Ant we are all a little behind on TTTW. But with Thanksgiving around the corner I think it will give us all time to catch up. Last weeks conversation actually centered around Russian literature. It was a great discussion, but I really wish we had a RusLit scholar since our range of RusLit is rather small. (Yes I totally made up the word RusLit but isn’t the internet a market for new words?)

We are trying a new coffee/tea place this week for two reasons.
1) It’s about a month old and looks like it needs an economic/morale boost

2) I have to prepare for pre-Thanksgiving dinner and this place is really close to my parents house 🙂

Anyway read to page 411 or chapter “Experiencing Technical Difficulty”. We will be meeting at Mojo Coffee and Tea. It’s on Wadsworth and Ohio, which is just South of Alameda. It’s in the shopping center with a Blockbuster and an Office Max. If you can’t find it call me.

I will not tell a lie 11/11/06 November 9, 2006

I will admit that book club was a little less book last week. I don’t know if it was the distraction of Sam’s wonderful culinary skills or the enchantment of the stadium seating, but not much was accomplished at book club. Though I have to admit that I had a great time at Sam and Joel’s place and can’t wait to play speed Scrabble again.

This week read up to Part II or page 281. We will be meeting at Common Grounds. http://denvercoffee.blogspot.com/2005/08/common-grounds-refreshing-break-in.html

See ya!
