We will have movie night on Saturday (December 29th) at 7:30. We do have a couple of agenda items to discuss.
– Secret Santas (most important)
– Do we want to continue to meet every other week?
– The order of the next books.
– BBC dinners as opposed to Saturday mornings.

You should have received an email entitled Book Exchange which contains your person for the event.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas! See you soon.

The Votes are in…sort of December 21, 2007

Okay so we have a decision to make. Because so few of us are voting the votes were all over the board meaning we have a 6 way tie. We can a.) Put all 6 on the list b.) Vote again to narrow it to 4 (plus Daywatch is 5).

Here are the books that were selected in case that makes a difference.
The Historian
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Under the Banner of Heaven
Emma
How to be Good
American Pastoral
and then Daywatch which is already on the list.

Post your thoughts! As for the gift giving, I will have a non BBC member randomly email you a name using the BBC email (so it doesn’t get spammed).

Have a great Christmas!

Don’t Judge a Book by a Blog Entry December 11, 2007

I’ve been trying to find some kind of book discussion for this book. For some reason I thought it was a lot more popular (stateside) then it really is. But I did find out that it was written in 1998. I did run across someone’s blog who had the following to say about Nightwatch:

“This is trash-fiction. What I mean by that is this book is not groundbreaking, it isn’t something that you would pass down to your children, it’s probably on par with most sci-fi fantasy novels, nothing really outstanding. There aren’t any vast, brain stretching concepts. You should also understand this isn’t always a bad thing. As long as you understand what your reading, and don’t expect more than it is.”

I was a bit offended. I mean Sergei may not be the next Dickens but I don’t think its trash-fiction. There are so many interesting philosophical concepts in the book. And lest strangers think I’m merely a sci-fi reading nerd defending the craft…I’m not. Well I had my day of reading certain sci-fi but I grew out of the SFO (sci-fi only) stage. I’m a little hurt that this man (from Missouri) would try to thwart my attempts to getting many people to read this book. Anyway just remember…Don’t judge a book by some morons blog entry.

Meeting this Saturday at Scooter Joe’s at 10:30. Read up to page 330.

Morally Ambiguous December 7, 2007

Morally Ambiguous – that is how the 2nd book, Daywatch, was described on Amazon and I thought that it was quite fitting. That boundary line they are so often quoting is SOO blurred. And, though I have said this before, if you aren’t reading this book go immediately and pick it up. You won’t regret it.

Posted here is the book list for the next voting cycle. I know we unanimously voted to read Daywatch (if you weren’t there last week to bad for you) so pick your top 4 from the list. Actually contemplate your top 4 until the 19th, this will give time for any nomination stragglers. If your book suggestions is missing let me know!

This is our week off but we will meet again on the 15th please be read up to page 330 (or if you have already finished keep the ending to yourself or I will entire the Twlight and beat the crap out of you 🙂
