Barely a Book Club

Teetering on the edge of a normal book club

7/1/06 – Visting Tinker Creek June 28, 2006

Filed under: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek — antof9 @ 12:50 am

We had a great movie night last Friday, even if we waited a little too late in the evening to begin. Some things we covered:
  – What exactly was the book that changed Dorian’s life?
  – Did the picture merely paint Dorian’s soul, how did his age fit in?
  – And last week I failed to mention that we discussed the book in the gay community.

This week we are starting the Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and reading up to Chapter 7. Let’s meet at the park on Yale and Garrison (with the Stone House on it). I will bring some donuts or muffins.

Have a great week.

PS – I have the book club flyers. I will post it on the blog, but I have copies if you want.
PSS – Did anyone notice my awful typo on the bookmark? Is anyone reading them??

6/23 – Book Club Movie Night June 19, 2006

This is it! What we have been talking about doing for months.
Book Club Movie Night!

We will be meeting on Friday at 6:30 at my house. After making our own pizzas we will finish up Dorian Gray followed by the 1945 version of The Picture of Dorian Gray, which seems to be the most critically acclaimed adaptation of the book.

We do need some volunteers for pizza toppings, so if you could reply to all or post what you would like to bring that would be great. Plan for about 8 and if you don't know how many just ask! Also it's totally byoa (bring your own anchovies.) I will provide all the meat.

Pizza Bread – small Boboli pre-cooked pizza bread maybe 2 people could bring those to spread out the costs

Vegetables:
Tomatoes (canned or fresh)
Green Peppers
Onions
Mushrooms (canned or fresh)
Black Olives
Pineapples (canned)
Cheese:
Mozzarella
Ricotta
Parmesan
Any other cheese that looks good.
For everyone who didn't get a chance to read the book this is a great opportunity to catch up on the story.

Hope to see you there.
Kylle

My address:
2653 S. Wolff Way
One block east of Sheridan off of Yale. Feel free to park in the circle or lower driveway.

BC 6/17 – Dorian Gray+Tea= FUN! June 12, 2006

Filed under: Picture of Dorian Gray — antof9 @ 6:14 pm

One question…why not meet at a park when the sunburn twins were NOT present? Actually the park was very nice, thanks for finding it.

We did discuss TPoDG…
 – How thick does Wilde's own orientation premeate the book, or is it all cultural?
 – Wilde's interesting writing style.

Next week we are meeting at 10:30 at the House of Commons for tea! That's what happens when bc is all girls. Read up to Chapter 14.  http://www.houseofcommonstea.com/Contact.htm

“A book is not only a friend, it makes friends for you. When you have possessed a book with mind and spirit, you are enriched. But when you pass it on you are enriched threefold” ~ Henry Miller

We are a group of individuals with varying backgrounds, occupations, and interests. What brings us together is our interest in books and the ideas that one author can provoke in us. None of us proclaim to be scholars, but merely average people trying to find meaning in literature.
All are welcome even if you aren’t a big reader. While we do set reading agendas it is never a prerequisite to come. We average 3 weeks to a book, but it really depends on the size of the book. After we finish a book we take one week off, but will have a movie night instead. We are a forum, an idea sound board, and a discussion group.

All first time vistors receive a free beverage on us.

When:   Saturday at 10:30
Where:  Various coffee houses, bagel shops, tea rooms, and parks in the Denver area. Sites will be posted the week before on this blog.
